A safe environment protects our children from harm, including sexual abuse and child molestation. It allows them to feel confident and secure in the classroom and at church.

The National Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People is a landmark document announced by the U.S. Conference of Bishops in 2002. The document is a response to the sexual abuse crisis in the Church and is their "Promise to Protect, Pledge to Heal."

Article 12 of the Charter mandates that all dioceses and parishes establish safe environment programs to help protect children from sexual abuse and child molestation. It will make clear to clergy and all members of the community the standards of conduct for clergy and other persons in positions of trust with regard to sexual abuse. This guideline is the basis for the Diocese of Springfield's safe environment program.

Coming soon the Diocese of Springfield adult safe environment training will now be completed through Catholic Mutual Group. The Safe Haven training identifies real-life abuse and neglect situation that employees and volunteers may encounter. It is online and video based. It is comprised of various components to help adults recognize and report signed of abuse or neglect and to increase awareness for protecting children.

Catholic Mutual Group’s online platform, CMG Connect, will house the safe environment training and the new online background checks. For more information about these exciting training and background check updates, please see the brochure linked below, contact you parish/school safe environment coordinator, or contact Alison.

A Solemn Promise - Disclosure and Transparency

Since 2002, our diocese has promoted an environment of awareness and safety that is certainly on par with leading organizations throughout the country, and in some ways more advanced than many, at least in its maturity. Our Diocesan Review Board and Special Panel have been in place and effective for more than 15 years, and our safe environment awareness and prevention efforts have been widely implemented and successful.
